From April 7 to 22, 2023, Mouvements Modernes is pleased to invite you to Vanessa Seward's first solo exhibition, Portraits.

These twenty paintings, specially made, showcase a rich and timeless artistic process, which has long been accomplished through women's clothing, as a weapon of seduction and self-confidence.

Growing up surrounded by family portraits and the gaze of her ancestors, Seward, whose mother was a painter, honed her skills modeling for artists such as John Ward.

After an impressive career in the world of couture, she continues her singular quest in painting and portraiture.
When the portrait, between selfies and digital filters, is overwhelming and oppressive, she paints what the images do not show, and freezing emotions, features, and characters with her unique sensitivity.

Inspired by feminine symbols, Sylvia Kristel, Debbie Harry or Bianca Jagger, Seward has a particular interest in the young women of today and the pivotal moments in their lives when they are building their sense of self, between vulnerability and determination.

For Seward, women experience several periods of "peak beauty and self-confidence" throughout their lives, and it is this delicate, yet powerful moment that she wants to share with us in her paintings of Anna, Elena, and Zoé.
